Will ITR Deadline Be Extended Again? Here’s What Experts Say
The Income Tax Department in May declared that this year, they are extending the due date to file ITR for Assessment Year 2025-26 and financial year 2024-25 to September 15, 2025. Earlier, this due date was July 31, 2025.
In a notification shared by the Central Board of direct Taxes (CBDT) on May 27, 2025, said that the extension was due to the “extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and considering the time required for system preparations and rollout of ITR utilities for AY 2025-26.”
CBDT said that the notified ITRs for the Assessment year 2025-26 have gone through structural and content revisions focused on simplifying compliance, increasing transparency and enabling correct reporting. These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration and testing of the corresponding utilities.
CBDT added that this extension is expected to diminish the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide sufficient time for compliance, thereby ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process.
As per a professional, taxpayers are facing issues with filing ITR for FY24-25, and it is taking extra time from the taxpayers’ side to submit the required details, especially to be able to claim deductions. To claim HRA, taxpayers now need to give all necessary details, including PAN, property address and place of property. Such information was previously meant to be provided to the employer, but now the ITR form also requires these inputs. Also, to claim a deduction against insurance, one needs to submit the policy number as well.
One of the CAs wrote on X (Previously known as Twitter) that the income tax portal was not approving digital signature certificates (DSC), due to which users are facing errors regarding the same. However, for now, since CBDT has not said anything regarding the further extension of the due date, taxpayers should try and complete their ITR by September 15, this year.
In case taxpayers missed the September 15, 2025, due date, they can still file a delayed return by December 31, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25 and assessment year 2025-26.
Even though taxpayers are allowed to file delayed ITR till the year end, these late filings will attract penalties (Between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 10,000) depending on the duration of delay. Here is the penalty details:
