Over 1 Kg Gold and Assets worth Crores of rupees detected from arrested GST officer in Odisha
The Odisha Vigilance Department recovered over one kilogramme gold and properties worth crores of rupees on Wednesday from several locations connected to a top CT and GST officer (Enforcement Unit), according to a statement issued from Y.K. Jethwa.
Chittaranjan Mohanty of Jagatsinghpur district has been named as the officer. According to a press statement, accused officer Mohanty has been placed in judicial custody until April 13.
“It is worth noting that Mohanty was apprehended and arrested on March 31 by Odisha Vigilance for accepting bribes of Rs 80,000 from a complainant to provide the closure report of a CT and GST case,” the release stated.
According to the official statement, the vigilance squad tracked down and searched Mohanty and his wife’s bank lockers at Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab and Sindh Bank at CDA, Cuttack.
“Gold jewellery weighing 1.060 Kg and 19 gold biscuits of 24 carats valued at 26 lakhs were recovered from the lockers,” according to the release.
The entire amount of gold recovered during the searches is 1.135 kg, which is worth Rs 64 lakh. Meanwhile, a total of Rs 6.59 lakh in cash was recovered, including Rs 5.4 lakh from the locker and Rs one lakh from Mohanty’s workplace, according to Vigilance Director Jethwa.
Additional bank and insurance deposits, as well as mutual fund investments totaling over Rs 1.04 crore, were discovered, according to the statement.
Cuttack Vigilance PS complaint No.4/23 U/s-7PC (Amendment)Act, 2018 was filed in this regard. An investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.
