Psychology, Al, Constitution: CAs of future to study diverse subjects
As envisaged in the National Education Policy 2020, the new chartered accountancy course has been designed with a multi-disciplinary focus that will vastly broaden the scope of learning of future CAs who will study diverse subjects ranging from psychology to Al, blockchain technology to data science, and Indian Constitution and traditional knowledge.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) announced the new curriculum on the sidelines of its two-day National Education Summit on Commerce, saying it is also looking into the possibility of offering exams in computer-based mode and in Indian languages. There are currently eight lakh students in the country studying for the CA exams.
The ICAI has also developed a model curriculum for commerce students from elementary school to undergraduate studies in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), and the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE).
Set up in 1949, the ICAI has grown to be the second-largest accounting body the world with around 3.65 lakh CAs and 44 overseas chapters.
Debashis Mitra, president of ICAI, said, "The institution's primary goal as an educator is to prepare future global professionals. In response, we created a new course curriculum that places a strong emphasis on using the mind, technology, ethics, and the new NEP. Government of India approval of the curriculum is currently pending."

Regarding the curriculum, Mitra stated: "You won't advance very far if you don't learn technology. What is going on around the world should be available online. We cannot avoid getting involved. And if you limit accounting to what the ICAI allows, then we are not doing accounting justice. Ac counting should not only be available through the Academic Bank of Credit, but also through the ICAI, which developed a country by way of uniformity and the need for the same accounting throughout the world."
"In order to make our professionals global professionals, technology is the main focus. should incorporate international best practises into the curriculum and not just be an Indian accountant. We cannot ignore NEP 2020, which calls for a shift away from rote learning and a greater emphasis on the application of the mind. Therefore, nothing will happen even with technology and international best practises unless you have ethics. Any curriculum lacking in ethics is useless. Today, we still use pen and paper for exams. Can we envision a system for online exams in the future? We may have online in the future."
According to Mitra, the new curriculum takes a multidisciplinary approach and includes the Academic Bank of Credit, which will hold the credits earned in CA courses.
For commerce education at the senior secondary level and graduate courses, ICAI also developed a model curriculum called "ICAI Ex- emplar: Preparing Future Ready Commerce Graduates" that incorporates the competence based approach through well-designed syllabi with objective statements.
