The Rajasthan Commercial Tax Department has seized 44 vehicles in the past three weeks as part of a crackdown on tax evasion. The action was taken up to September 3 after officials found differences between the actual quantity of goods being transported and the quantity mentioned in bills and e-way bills.

According to a department official, enforcement teams intercepted the vehicles after finding that they were carrying more goods than what had been declared in the documents. Preliminary investigations showed that, in some cases, traders and transporters may have deliberately declared lower quantities of goods.

The department suspects that such practices could have been used to show lower sales and reduce the amount of tax payable. The seized vehicles are being dealt with as per the rules, while further investigations are underway.

Officials are also checking the records of the traders as well as the transporters involved. The department is examining bills, e-way bills, the actual goods being carried, transport details and other related transactions.

The department said that carrying more goods than declared on a bill cannot simply be treated as a clerical mistake. If done deliberately, it could be a way of hiding actual sales and avoiding tax.

The Commercial Tax Department said enforcement and surveillance will continue across Rajasthan. Action will also be taken against businesses transporting goods without mandatory e-way bills or using other methods to evade taxes.

The department said the crackdown is aimed at curbing tax evasion and protecting honest businesses that follow the law. Officials said stronger enforcement will also help ensure that tax-compliant businesses do not face unfair competition from those avoiding taxes.
