Supreme Court: Lawyers Not Responsible for Bad Service under Consumer Protection Law On Tuesday, the Supreme Court said that lawyers cannot be sued for providing bad service under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 This means they are not responsible for their services' quality in consumer courts. The Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal said being a lawyer is different from other jobs. Lawyers must follow their clients' instructions and can't make decisions without asking them first. Clients have a lot of control over what lawyers do. This means that legal contracts are personal and not covered by the Consumer Protection Act. The judgment was made in response to a plea filed by various bar bodies and individuals, including the Bar Council of India, Delhi High Court Bar Association, and Bar of Indian Lawyers, challenging a 2007 ruling by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).
