Teacher Lost Rs. 3.82 Lakh in Pan Card Scam by Cybercrooks

A teacher who is 36 years old and working with a preschool in Mira Road became the target of a cybercriminal who siphoned off Rs. 3.82 lakh from her bank account under the aspect of updating her Permanent Account Number (PAN) card.

In the statement given by her to the police, the complainant said that the lady received a message from an unidentified number on her WhatsApp stating that her bank account would be inactive for not updating her PAN card. A link was tagged with the message to carry out the update process. She clicked on the link in which she was redirected to a page where she was led to fill in crucial banking and PAN details. Meanwhile, she also got a call from a person who pretended to be a bank official offering help to complete the updating process.

The unknowing woman not only shared her personal bank details but also revealed the One-Time Passwords (OTP) to the caller.

Referring to the technical issue, the caller tried to obtain the banking information of her family members who had accounts in the same bank. The lady sensed that something was wrong and disconnected the line. However, within minutes she got a message on her phone from her bank that Rs. 3,82,100 had been transferred from her account.

That lady immediately registered a complaint with the cyber cell, under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act against the cyber crook at the Naya Nagar police station in Mira Road.
