Technical Glitches in GST Portal Leave Dealers Worried about the Last Date of Filing GSTR1

Dealers are apprehensive about missing the rapidly approaching deadline for reporting GSTR1 due to technical issues in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system over the previous four days.

The 11th of every month is the deadline for reporting GSTR1 (sales information).

According to tax experts, failing to file returns by the due date may prevent taxpayers from receiving the input tax credit.

“The GST portal has been extremely sluggish for the previous four days, causing issues with document uploads. The portal does not accept proper login credentials and does not enable file uploads. Delay or failure to file the GSTR1 by the deadline may prevent taxpayers from receiving ITC,” Madhya Pradesh Tax Law Bar Association president AK Lakhotia said.

According to tax specialists, completing GST returns needs files to be supplied in the JSON format, however the GST site does not accept the format and displays problems while uploading the file.

According to tax experts, composition dealers have also had difficulty completing their annual returns for the fiscal year 2019-20 due to the lack of table 6 in GSTR 4, which asks for data of outward supply/inward sales triggering reverse charge during the year.

The GSTR-4 form is an annual return form for taxpayers who have chosen the GST Composition scheme. Rather of filing three monthly reports, a dealer who has chosen the composition scheme is only needed to file one return, the GSTR-4, once a year by the 30th of April of the next fiscal year.

“Even composition dealers had trouble completing GSTR 4, and many of them missed the deadline. Failure to file the return by April 30 would result in a late fine of Rs 50 per day beginning May 1 and a maximum penalty of Rs 10,000,” Lakhotia said.
