UGC Released New Curriculum and Credit Framework for Post-Graduate Programmes

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the New Curriculum and Credit Framework for the Post-Graduate Programme. The notice was released on June 12, 2024, and the framework on June 14, 2024, at ugc.gov.in. The framework has been designed considering the restructured degree programmes, and entry & exit procedures.

The framework has been made to emphasise the student’s empowerment by providing them with freedom, flexibility and choices.

In the framework there is no discipline-specific entry requirement and mentions the credit structure and curriculum contents for both one-year and two-year Postgraduate programmes. Along with this also offers its students an exit option at the end of the first year in two-year postgraduate programmes.

Statement of the UGC Chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar on Twitter, ‘With no discipline-specific entry requirements, the framework details the credits and academic structure for both one-year and two-year PG programmes. It offers an exit option after the first year in the two-year program. Flexibility and mobility are the hallmarks of this framework’.

A restructured degree programme has been promoted in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The NEP 2020 states that “the undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4-year duration with appropriate certifications, e.g., a UG certificate after completing 1 year in a discipline or field including vocational and professional areas, or a UG diploma after 2 years of study, or a Bachelor’s degree after a 3-year programme. The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor’s programme, however, shall be the preferred option since it allows the opportunity to experience the full range of holistic and multidisciplinary education in addition to a focus on the chosen major and minors as per the choices of the student.”

In accordance with the restructured undergraduate programmes as mentioed above, the policy specifies that the HEIs will also have the flexibility to offer different designs of PG programmes.
