UGC Issues Defaulters List of 157 Universities Yet to Appoint Ombudspersons
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released an updated list of universities that have not appointed Ombudspersons in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Student Grievances) Regulations, 2023. There are 108 public universities, 2 recognized universities, and 47 private universities around the nation that are included in this list.
On 17th January 2024, the UGC already made public a notice identifying universities that have disregarded the guidelines. The most current update, as of 1st June 2024, addresses the present state of affairs in light of remarks made by several Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) concerning the nominations they had made for Ombudspersons.
The UGC has underlined how important these appointments are in giving students access to a formal grievance procedure. It is recommended that the listed universities abide by the regulations as quickly as possible and use the appropriate email addresses to inform the UGC of any appointments.
Major institutions featured include Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management, Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences, and numerous others from different states.
In order to preserve the quality and integrity of higher education institutions in India, universities must abide by the rules, according to Prof. Manish R. Joshi, Secretary, UGC.
The UGC keeps an eye on institutions’ adherence to its rules in order to provide an equitable and open learning environment for all students.
