The Preliminary (prelims) exam is the first step of the UPSC CSE exam, popularly known as the UPSC IAS exam. The results of this exam are not used to compile the final merit list. The first phase is for weeding out unsuitable applicants. The Prelims exam is divided into two question papers: Paper I and Paper II. The Prelims exam syllabus covers themes from General Studies and Aptitude. Paper II, often known as the CSAT, is a qualifying exam in which students must obtain at least 33%.
If a candidate does not receive 33% in Paper II, he or she will not be eligible for further consideration because his or her Paper I will not be examined. The cut-off list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in Paper I. Both Paper I and Paper II have negative markings, i.e., if a candidate answers any questions incorrectly, then marks will be deducted from the candidate’s total marks. The detailed exam pattern for the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam 2023 is tabulated below:
Paper No. | Paper Name | No. of Questions | Total Marks | Duration |
I | General Studies I | 100 | 200 | 2 hours |
