51 Trucks seized by Punjab GST Department for Tax Evasion

The Punjab Goods and Services Tax Department has seized 51 lorries filled with scrap and steel commodities in Mandi Gobindgarh for evading taxes on Wednesday, August 24, 2023.

The GST department launched a large inspection drive at many nakas in Mandi Gobindgarh. The police and officials of the department physically checked the trucks and inspected the documentation. The vehicles were detained when it was discovered that they had been evading taxes worth many thousands of rupees.

Jiwanjot Kaur, the GST department‘s Additional Commissioner (Taxation), stated that the department is committed to combating tax evasion and would take strong action against those who break the law. She said that the owners of the trucks will be issued notices and penalties will be imposed on them.

This is not the first time the GST department has pursued tax evaders in Punjab. Several vehicles have been confiscated and offenders have been fined crores of rupees in the last several months, according to the department. Several persons have also been arrested for tax evasion by the department.

The GST department’s assault on tax evasion is a step in the right direction. It will contribute to ensuring that everyone pays their fair share of taxes and that the government has the resources necessary to deliver important services.
