Income Tax Return is a form which a person supposed to submit to the Income Tax Department of India. It comprises information on a person’s earnings and the taxes that must be paid on those earnings throughout the year.

It is only for those taxpayer who are crossing the threshold limit prescribed by government for filing income tax, are required to File ITR.

ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7 are the seven types of ITR forms required by the Income Tax Department, and their applicability is determined by the nature and quantity of income as well as the type of taxpayer.

The status of an income tax return, or ITR, can be checked once it has been filed and validated. Taxpayers should regularly check their ITR status to ensure that it has been accepted and processed. “If your return is correctly filed and processed by the department, the status reflected in your account will be ‘ITR processed.'”

The ITR status may be changed to defective or the matter may be forwarded to an evaluating officer if the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru discovers some irregularities or recommends adjustments.

Different types of ITR status:

Submitted and awaiting e-Verification / Verification: This is the state of your ITR if you haven’t e-Verified it yet, or if your properly signed ITR-V hasn’t arrived at CPC yet.

e-Verified / Verified successfully: When you’ve submitted and properly e-Verified / Verified your return, but it hasn’t yet been processed, you’ll see this status.

Processed: When your return has been successfully processed, you will see this status.

Defective: This is the situation in which the department discovers a flaw in the submitted return, such as the absence of required information or contradictions. In this situation, you will get a notice under section 139(9) instructing you to correct the deficiency within a certain time period after receiving the notice. If you do not react to a defective return status, your ITR is considered void and will not be processed.

Case transferred to Assessing Officer: When the CPC transfers your ITR to your jurisdictional AO, it is that condition. If your case is assigned to your AO, the officer will call you to obtain additional information.
