GST department arrested one person in a bogus billing scam worth Rs 700 crore
The Gujarat GST department arrested one person from Bhavnagar who it claimed to be the “mastermind” in a bogus billing scam worth Rs 700 crore.
The SGST department detained the suspect on Sunday. He was identified as Mohammad Abbas Shabbirali Savjani, also known as Mohammad Tata.
We have so far recovered around Rs 60 crore in tax credits. About Rs 700 crore in bogus billing and about Rs 130 crore in tax credits were stolen. The main suspect, Mohammad Abbas Shabbirali Savjani (Mohammad Tata) of Bhavnagar, evaded capture throughout the inquiry and was always on the run. He was detained in Ahmedabad close to the SG Highway. Milind Kavatkar, Additional Commissioner of Enforcement, stated at a press conference in Ahmedabad on Monday that the arrests had been conducted in accordance with Section 69 (authority to arrest) of the GST Act.
In June 2021, a preliminary verification revealed two vehicles to be fake, exposing the scam, which had been active since 2017. In connection with the case, ten people have been detained thus far.
