Chartered Accountant and 2 Income Tax Officials sentenced to rigorous imprisonment by CBI Court

A special court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Cases has convicted a Chartered Accountant (CA), Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, and an Income Tax Officer in a Bribery case of Rs. 9,00,000.

Pankaj Gupta, then ACIT Indore, Ajay Viren, then ITO and CA Shyam Sunder Mundra were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 3 years along with a fine of Rs. 80000.

Case was registered against them for demanding illegal gratification of Rs 9 lakh for showing favor to the complainant in connection with the settlement of income tax.

After the investigation, a charge sheet was filed against them by the CBI. During the trial, 33 prosecution witnesses were examined.

On basis of various pieces of evidence and witnesses, the trial court found them guilty and convicted them.
