A 28-year-old employee of Angadia was abducted on Saturday and robbed of Rs 32 lakh by an unidentified man and a woman who pretended to be sales tax authorities. The complainant was requested to sit on the accused’s bike after the accused initially enquired about a bag holding money that the complainant was carrying. His backpack and phone were taken from him when they brought him from the Kalbadevi neighbourhood to a location close to the Dockyard railway station via the JJ flyover. Within seven hours of the FIR, investigators apprehended the pair. The accused were revealed to be security officers working in south Bombay at a well-known market.

The incident happened at around 5 o’clock in the Kalbadevi area close to the Aadarsh hotel. Jatharam Prajapati, the complainant, was scheduled to deliver Rs 32 lakh to his employer’s office as he returned from another angadia office.

“The suspect approached Prajapti on a motorcycle and stopped him. When questioned what was in the bag, they replied that they were sales tax officers. After taking his phone, the defendant urged him to sit on their motorcycle. The woman got off the bike and rode away with the bag after they transported him from the Kalbadevi neighbourhood to the JJ overpass. After that, the rider rode in the direction of Dockyard Road Railway Station and left Prajapati off there. He then motioned for him to depart and sped off “reported a policeman.

In response, they went to the L T Marg police station and filed a FIR against the two suspects under sections 365 (kidnapping or abduction with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), and 170 (impersonating a public servant) of the IPC. Prajapti informed his office of the incident. Police looked over the CCTV footage and found the accused’s bike’s licence plate.

“The bike owner said that his friend had stolen it, claiming that he needed to visit a bank. We located the suspect and detained him along with his companion “said senior inspector Jyoti Desai. Sanjaysingh Karcholi, 33, and Razia Shaikh, 36, the two apprehended suspects, were presented before a judge and held in police custody until March 1.

Shaikh was a security guard at Mangaldas Market, while Karcholi was a security supervisor. The complainant was targeted by the accused after learning that he worked at an angadia office, according to an officer. The money that was stolen is being recovered by investigators.

The incident occurs a month after police detained seven people, among them a woman, for reportedly breaking into a bullion trader’s business in Kalbadevi while pretending to be ED investigators. With cash and gold worth a total of Rs 4 crore, the seven accused fled.
