GST Fraud Alert: Farmer receives Rs.4.9 crore notice to pay GST for PAN misuse

The Goods and Services Tax department has issued a show-cause notice to a farmer in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, requiring him to pay Rs 4.9 crore in back taxes. Mehram Khan, the farmer, says that he is innocent and that his PAN number was exploited by someone else.

Khan stated that he received the warning from the GST department in Nagpur, Maharashtra, two months ago. According to the notification, he failed to pay GST on a Rs.100 crore turnover. Khan stated that he is a small farmer with a monthly salary of Rs.5,000 and has never done any business worth more than Rs.100 crore.

Khan has filed a police report and has asked the GST department to look into the incident. The GST department has stated that it is examining the case and that if Khan is determined to be innocent, he would not face any penalties.

This isn’t the first time a farmer has been attacked by GST swindlers. Several farmers have already received notifications from the GST agency requesting substantial sums of money in taxes. In the majority of cases, the farmers were able to demonstrate their innocence and were not penalised.

The GST administration urged taxpayers to be cautious and to keep their PAN numbers safe. The agency has also stated that individuals who utilise PAN numbers for fraudulent purposes will face harsh penalties.

If you get notice from the GST department seeking payment of taxes, you should first verify that the notice is authentic. You can accomplish this by calling the GST department and requesting verification. If the warning is real, you should consult with a tax adviser to evaluate your alternatives.
