UP Finance Minister Suresh Khanna appointed as convenor of GoM of GST Council
The Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Suresh khanna, has been named convenor of the GST Council‘s Group of Ministers (GoM) to adjust the tax rates on goods and services.
The GST Council has also issued an order on the partial amendment and reorganisation of the GoM.
According to the Council’s press statement, the decision to appoint Khanna as convenor was based on his contributions during GST council sessions and meetings of various groups of ministers.
Earlier, the GoM was convened by Ex Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. It is worth noting that the GST Council periodically revises tax rates in the public interest. A group of ministers has been constituted for this purpose.
Suresh Khanna will chair the reconstituted GoM, which will also include Goa’s Transport Minister Mavin Godinho, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary (Finance Minister of Bihar), Rajasthan’s Urban Development Minister Shanti Kumar Dhariwal, Chandrama Bhattacharya (West Bengal Finance Minister), Krishna Byre Gowda (Karnataka Revenue Minister), and Kerala’s Finance Minister K N Balagopal.
Earlier, on October 7, 2023, the GST Council had its 52nd meeting in Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the 52nd Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council resolved on Saturday to limit the maximum age of the President and members of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).
The GSTAT President will be limited to 70 years of age, while members will be limited to 67 years.
This is a shift from the previous age limits of 67 and 65 years for the President and GSTAT members, respectively.
