A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) was allegedly scammed of Rs.2.26 crore by cyber scammers under the guise of filing revised income tax returns.

Following the victim’s complaint, the Panchkula police’s cyber unit opened a cheating case and began an investigation. The complainant, Braham Sarup Nayyar, has lived in the United Kingdom for the past 50 years.

In his police complaint, Nayyar stated that he sold his property in India and that the purchaser deducted TDS (tax deducted at source) under Section 195 from the sale. I filed the ITR (income tax return) for the assessment year 2023-24 on July 24, last year, and sought a refund of Rs.56,58,370, he said.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Nayyar’s CA was unable to enter his account to examine the facts, so he called the income tax department’s ‘toll-free’ number for online assistance.

During the call, someone on the other end stated that his income information was missing and requested vital details. The scammers then allegedly filed a revised ITR and received a large refund, according to the source.
