Income Tax Practitioners imprisoned for 3 Years in TDS Refund Fraud Case
A Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ahmedabad on Friday convicted two income tax practitioners, Suresh Prajapati and Shobhna Prajapati, of illegally claiming TDS refunds with fake or forged certificates. The court sentenced them to three years in jail and levied a Rs.60,000 fine, according to an official CBI statement.
The CBI filed the case in December 2007 in response to claims of illegal income tax refunds granted by Ward 12(3) of Ahmedabad’s Income Tax Office. The refunds were allegedly based on fraudulent TDS certifications.
Investigations found that Suresh Prajapati, an income tax practitioner, filed multiple income tax returns for individual assesses while attaching forged TDS certificates. Despite the bogus nature of the certificates, refunds of around Rs.3.61 lakh were processed and misappropriated.
After a thorough trial, the special CBI court convicted both accused guilty of the accusations and imprisoned them to three years in prison with financial penalties.
The verdict highlights investigating authorities’ continued efforts to combat tax fraud. The ruling serves as a deterrent to tax evasion, emphasizing the need of financial transparency and compliance.
Further investigations and surveillance efforts by the authorities aim to avoid such occurrences of tax evasion and protect the system’s integrity.
