ICAI issued revised Technical Guide on Accounting for Expenditure on CSR Activities

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has issued revised technical guide on accounting for expenditure on corporate social responsibility activities.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an integral part of the corporate landscape, evolving into a key mechanism for businesses to contribute to social welfare, environmental sustainability, and economic development. The Companies Act, 2013, under the guidance of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, established a regulatory framework mandating certain companies to engage in CSR activities, making India to legally enforce such requirements. This move underlines the importance of CSR in nation-building, sustainable development, and strengthening public-private partnerships. CSR activities are becoming increasingly broad in scope, with a greater emphasis on long-term social and environmental impacts.

As CSR has become a top priority for businesses globally, the necessity for transparent and accurate accounting of CSR expenditures has grown. Proper accounting for these expenses not only assures compliance with regulatory frameworks, but also increases the company’s credibility and reliability in the eyes of stakeholders.

Recognizing the changes involved in CSR accounting with the enforcement of various provisions of the Companies (Amendment) Act, 2019, the Companies (Amendment) Act, 2020 w.e.f 2021 read with the Companies(Corporate Social Responsibility Policy)Amendment Rules, 2021 and the Amendments to Schedule III on 24 March 2021, felt need to revise the existing publication “Technical Guide on Accounting for Expenditure on Corporate Social Responsibility Activities” of 2020 edition.

In response to the growing complexity of CSR accounting and reporting, the Corporate Laws and Corporate Governance Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is proud to present the Revised Edition of the publication “Technical Guide on Accounting for Expenditure on Corporate Social Responsibility Activities”.

This technical guide is designed to offer a detailed and practical understanding of the accounting treatment of CSR expenditures and their presentation in financial statements. It covers a broad range of topics, including guidance on the accounting treatment for CSR activities as per the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 in the light of the recent legal position.

This publication aims to provide members with guidance necessary to ensure compliance with CSR regulations while maintaining transparency and accuracy in financial reporting. It will serve as an invaluable resource for Chartered Accountants, company management, and other stakeholders involved in CSR activities.

This publication will serve as essential guidance for ensuring effective and transparent accounting of CSR activities, as well as a helpful resource for all professionals and stakeholders interested in CSR accounting concerns.
