GNSS to replace FASTag soon? Know about GPS-Based Toll Collection System

Travelling on Indian highways will be made flawless from May 01, 2025. As of May 01, 2025, a new GPS-based toll collection system will be introduced, and FASTags will be permanently removed.

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) was anticipated to be introduced on April 01, 2025; however, it was delayed. It is now expected to be implemented from May 01, 2025.

Seeing the same, the Union Minister for Road and Transport Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday, “In the next 15 days, we are coming up with a toll policy, and you will be satisfied with our toll policy (National Highways). We are starting a satellite toll system so that you don’t have to stop for toll plazas…”

What Is GNSS and How Does It Work?

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a newly introduced toll system that uses satellites to track how far your vehicle travels and then deducts the toll amount directly from your bank account. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said this system will save time, reduce costs, and make toll collection much faster.

How is the system of GNSS different from FASTag?

The system of FASTag requires vehicles to stop in front of toll booths, which sometimes leads to long lines for several hours. However, this system is faster in comparison to the traditional cash collection method.

On the other hand, the system of GNSS works with virtual toll booths, which are connected to the satellites. These satellites keep track of vehicles’ locations, and accordingly, the amount is reduced from the bank account of the individual as per the distance covered by them.

This newly launched system eliminates the need for setting up physical toll booths, hence also saving money. This system makes the process of collecting money smoother.
