ITR Processing Time

The Income Tax Department said that the process of issuing a refund only starts after the taxpayer has e-verified their return. Normally, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks for the refund to be credited to the taxpayer’s bank account. If the refund is not received within this period, the taxpayer is advised to check their email for any communication from the IT Department.

How to Check Status of Your ITR Refund

  • Step 1: Visit the e-portal of the Income Tax Department.
  • Step 2: Log in using your User ID (which is your PAN), password, and the captcha code shown on the screen.
  • Step 3: Once logged in, click on the ‘e-File’ tab and select ‘View Filed Returns’ from the dropdown menu.
  • Step 4: A list of all your filed Income Tax Returns will appear. Look for the relevant Assessment Year and click on ‘View Detail’ next to it.
  • Step 5: You will be able to see the refund status under the ‘Status’ section.

If needed, you can also download the ITR-V (acknowledgement) for more information.

What to Do If Your ITR Refund Is Delayed

If your ITR refund is delayed or fails, make sure that:

  • Your bank account is pre-validated and is linked to your PAN.
  • The name mentioned in your bank accounts is the same as the PAN card, and your IFSC code is valid.
  • Your return has been e-verified.
  • The bank account added on the income tax portal is active and not closed.
  • If your status shows ‘Refund Failed‘, you may be required to update your bank details on the income tax portal and raise a refund re-issue request.
