No Income Tax Refunds for AY 2025-26 until Old ITRs are reviewed by Government
The Income Tax Department has received over 75 lakh income tax return for the AY 2025-26. And more than 71 lakh have been successfully verified out of these. Even after this huge number, refunds on the newly filed ITRs are being delayed. Those taxpayers who were expecting quick refunds are now facing delays. The Income Tax Department has decided to check all the pending assessments of taxpayers and old returns first before issuing any refunds. This step will prevent any false refund claims.
The process of filing ITR for AY 2025-26 has already began at the end of the May. As of now, over 75 lakh returns have been filed and 71.1 lakh of these have been e-verified. Prior, the number of ITRs processed was clearly shown on the official income tax website. But now, this particular data has been removed. A section on the site which once showed the number of processed returns now appears blank.
According to the tax professionals, the delay is related to a new approach by the department. It wants to first verify that taxpayers have filed their old ITRs properly. Old returns and assessment orders are now being reviewed once again. If there is any open case from previous years going under examination, then the refund from the new ITR will not be processed until everything is cleared.
Also, many taxpayers are raising concerns because they have submitted their returns but there is no update or timeline on which the refunds will be issued. There is confusion due to the absence of any official communication or tracking option to know why the refund is delayed or when it might come.
Latest Updates So Far:
Experts suggest that taxpayers should stay calm and if their ITR has been filed correctly and all information is accurate, the refund will come but there may be a delay. Taxpayers should keep checking the processing status regularly.
The tax department has provided more time, it has extended the last date to file the ITR for AY 2025-26. The new deadline is now September 15, 2025, instead of the earlier July 31. This provides the non-audit taxpayers an additional 46 days to complete their filing.
