Tax Audit 2025 Due Date to be Extended Amid IT Portal Glitches, unreasonable timelines?

The September 30, 2025, due date for filing the Tax Audit Report (TAR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) is approaching, creating pressure on businesses and tax professionals. Several tax professionals and associations in recent weeks have reached out to the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, urging her to extend the due date for filing the Tax Audit Report (TAR).

The Nagpur Chamber of Commerce recently wrote a formal representation dated September 17, 2025, to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), urging a two-month extension in the Income Tax Audit (TAR) filing deadline, from September 30, 2025, to November 30, 2025. In the representation, the Nagpur Chamber of Commerce emphasised issues such as errors and glitches on the ITR portal, delays in the release of tax audit forms, the new ICAI format, and more.

The representation read, “The CBDT should extend the date immediately without waiting till the very last day, as they did on the 15th September deadline. Technical glitches and delayed release of utilities/schema cause undue hardship to traders in making proper compliance; timely extension is much needed and will be appreciated.”

The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP), an apex body of tax professionals having more than 11,000 individual members and 146 bar associations as its affiliated members, recently filed a writ petition in the Delhi High Court against the Union of India and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (respondents) for seeking directions to the respondents to extend time limits for filing the Income Tax Audit (TAR), which is due for filing by September 30, 2025, and also Income Tax Returns (ITRs) by October 31, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), and accordingly, immediate directions are necessary in the matter. For these requests, AIFTP cited reasons like floods, landslides, technical glitches, and compliance challenges.

In the past, the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) has also written a representation to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), requesting to extend the due date for filing the Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for non-audit cases and Tax Audit Reports (TARs) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) till October 15th and 31st, respectively.

Also, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the second-largest professional accounting body in the world, has also requested the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the due date for filing the Tax Audit Reports (TARs) for the financial year 2024-25 by two months till December 31, 2025, citing the complexities and challenges faced by taxpayers and professionals in meeting current requirements.

There are several other tax professionals who have requested the government to extend the due date for TAR filing for FY25.
