UIDAI Deactivates over over 2 crore Aadhaar Numbers

In an effort to maintain the accuracy of the Aadhaar database, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated the Aadhaar numbers of over 2 crore individuals who are no longer alive. This move aims to update the record of UIDAI and prevent any potential identity fraud.

To collect the data of deceased individuals, UIDAI is cooperating with various entities, including the Registrar General of India (RGI), States/UTs, Public Distribution System, and  National Social Assistance Program. The UIDAI is also working with banks and financial institutions to get more data on deceased individuals.

By deactivating the Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons, the UIDAI wants to prevent the misuse of the identity of these persons for any fraudulent activity, as these Aadhaar numbers can be used to avail the government welfare benefits, leading to identity theft.

To make this process easier, UIDAI has asked the families to report any of their deceased members directly through the myAadhaar portal.
