Amravati Declared as Capital of Andhra Pradesh; Government Amends Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act

The government has announced Amravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. In this regard, the  Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification dated 6 April 2026, notifying the amendment of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The new act, called the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, has received the assent of the President. This amendment has been made under the earlier law, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

According to the notification, the sentence, which was earlier in the law, “there shall be a new capital,” has now been clearly changed to “Amaravati shall be the new capital.” This means that Amravati has been earmarked as the new capital of the state. It has also been clarified that “Amaravati” will include all those areas that are notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.

This Act has been deemed to be effective from 2 June 2024, while its official notification was published on 6 April 2026. That is, this law will be considered applicable with retrospective effect.

This amendment has been made by revising Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, under which provisions related to the capital of the state are outlined. Thus, through this notification, Amaravati has been legally declared the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati.
