A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of extorting money from a local jewellers while posing as an income tax department investigator. Suresh Kumar, the culprit, was detained by state cyber police within 72 hours of filing the case.
On April 14, the police got a written complaint from a local jeweller alleging that a man posing as an income tax officer duped them into depositing Rs.5.20 lakh fraudulently between March 9 and March 19.
Following that, Yogesh Deshmukh, the state cyber police chief, formed a squad led by Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Srivastava. According to authorities, the accused reportedly gathered information about the jeweller and income tax officer by conducting a web search for past years’ IT frauds.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Suresh Kumar had previously defrauded people by impersonating senior police officers or top officials, including the Prime Minister. He has had over 62 cases of cheating filed against him in the past.
His method of operation entails collecting any officer’s mobile number by dialling the PA of the senior officer of the IT department on the landline. He would then use social media to persuade them of his legitimacy. He had previously tricked a major politician in Rajasthan.
A mobile phone, SIM card, and Rs.1 lakh in cash were seized during his arrest. He was involved in criminal acts such as defrauding people in Rajasthan and other states, and he was once sentenced to one year in prison.
Inspectors Neetu Kunsariya, Zeenat Qureshi, Suresh Meena, and Dharmendra Sharma all played key roles in the conman’s capture.
