August brings some important financial updates that might affect your taxes, banking, loans and even travel plans. Some of the key changes taking place today include: Last date for filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) for companies and professionals is August 31, Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), changes in bank service charges, Indian Railways' new Tatkal ticket booking system and updated Axis Bank credit card benefits.
Here are the key financial updates to know this month.
ITR due date for business and professionals
The deadline for filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 for taxpayers who are not required to get their accounts audited is August 31. This deadline is for self-employed professionals, freelancers, small business owners and those availing presumptive taxation scheme under Sections 44AD and 44ADA of the income-tax Act.
In case of missing the due date, you may be liable to pay a late filing fee of up to Rs 5,000 under Section 234F. If applicable, you may also have to pay interest under Section 234A on any unpaid tax. Taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns are encouraged to do so before August 31 to avoid additional charges.
RBI MPC meeting August 2026
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India will meet between August 3 and August 5 and the policy decision is expected on August 5.
The committee’s decision on interest rates and its outlook on the economy in the next few weeks could impact home loan EMIs, loan interest rates and fixed deposit (FD) returns.
Railway tickets new tatkal booking system
August 1 will see the introduction of a token-based system for Tatkal tickets booking from reservation counters by Indian Railways.
The new system aims to reduce long queues, manage crowds better and make the booking process easier for passengers.
Changes to Banking Regulations
A number of banks are revising certain service charges from August 1. For instance, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has hiked its SMS alert charges to Rs 0.30 per message, with a monthly cap. Customers should also check with their banks for any updates in debit card annual charges, transaction fees or any other banking service charges which may come into effect this month.
Keeping up with those changes can help taxpayers avoid penalties, bank customers know about new fees and borrowers and investors understand how coming policy decisions could affect their finances.
