Cabinet approves Amendments to Meghalaya GST Act, 2017 The State Cabinet approved amendments to the Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax, 2017, the Meghalaya Medical Council, and the National Law University on Tuesday. Three ordinances passed by the government were presented to the Cabinet as Bills and will be debated in the State Assembly during the Autumn Session, namely —
  • Proposal to repeal Rajitlal University Act 2011
  • Amendment of the Meghalaya GST Act 2017
  • Meghalaya Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2023
Cabinet approved the amendment to the National Law University of Meghalaya (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The amendment proposes a change in the structure of the Finance Committee of the University was proposed and nomenclatures that has to be changed in line with the Act. The same will be presented in the State Assembly. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while addressing the media, said these are amendments that are mandated in terms of the decisions taken by the GST Council which are then implemented by the state governments. He stated that each state government must amend the GST Act in accordance with the GST Council's changes. "These are just regularising the decisions made by the Council by amending them, and this was done by an ordinance, and now we will be regularising it by bringing it to the Assembly," he explained. Sangma stated about the Meghalaya Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2023, "This was yet another ordinance. If you recall, nomenclature changes were made, and an ordinance was passed a few weeks ago, and that has now been regularised." He stated that the amendment to the National Law University of Meghalaya Bill, 2023 was related to the University's finance committee. In addition, through an ordinance, the government repealed the Rajit Lal University Act, 2011. According to him, all of this will be presented for regularisation at the upcoming Assembly session, which will be held from September 15 to 22.
