CBDT Relaxes Time to Process ITR Marked Invalid

CBDT Allows Extra Time to Process Returns Marked Invalid Due to Technical Error
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has come up with great relief for the taxpayers who faced issues while filing ITR due to technical glitches. Many taxpayers who filed their Income Tax Return (ITR) electronically faced an issue caused by technical errors. The Central Processing Centre Bengaluru (CPC) wrongly marked the ITRs "invalid."
The board has decided to extend the deadline prescribed under the Income Tax Act, 1961, to process such ITRs. As per the latest circular issued by CBDT, the ITRs filed online up to March 31, 2024, that were wrongly marked invalid by the CPC will now be processed. The taxpayers will receive the official intimation under section 143(1) by March 31, 2026.
The board has clearly mentioned in the circular that the taxpayers will also receive an Income Tax refund (if any), along with interest. However, if the taxpayer's PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, the refund will not be paid, as stated in the circular No.03/2023 dated 28.03.2023.
