CBI caught Income Tax Officer for accepting Bribe of Rs.50,000
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) caught an Income Tax Officer in Haryana’s Rohtak after he accepted a Rs 50,000 bribe from a 62-year-old man. Hemant Kumar Nain, an officer at the Income Tax Commissionerate, is accused of concealing his identity and demanding a bribe in connection with an income tax notice issued to a senior citizen.
However, Hemant Nain was not arrested since he acquired a medical condition after being caught by the investigation agency. A case was filed against him on March 9.
The complainant, a senior citizen’s daughter, stated that her father received a notice from the Income Tax Department for the financial year 2019-20 and assessment year 2020-21. On January 28, he sent his response using the online portal.
On February 5, the complainant’s father received a call on WhatsApp from someone purporting to be Sanjay Kumar of the Income Tax Office in New Delhi.
The caller informed him that a demand notice for Rs.1 crore was due to be issued, and the 62-year-old man instructed the caller to speak with his daughter about the situation.
The caller, posing as Sanjay Kumar, allegedly sought Rs.5 lakh to avoid the demand notice and settle the issue.
Following negotiations, the bribe amount was allegedly decreased to Rs.2 lakh, and the caller offered that the money be delivered via hawala or handed over in Delhi. The accused later consented to take the bribe money from the complainant’s father at Netaji Subhash Place in New Delhi.
The CBI set up a trap there, and Nain was caught taking Rs 50,000 from the complainant’s father. He had been using the alias Sanjay Kumar to disguise his identity.
CBI officials searched Nain’s house and workplace in Rohtak and Sonipat, Haryana, and discovered documents and electronic evidence.
Further inquiry is underway.
