CCI Orders Intel to Pay Rs 27.38 Crore for Violating Competition Act
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined Intel Corporation Rs. 27.38 crore for violating competition Act, 2002. The order was passed on February 12, 2026, under Section 27 of the Competition Act, 2002, by the CCI.
The case started when Matrix Info Systems Private Limited filed a complaint. The complaint stated that from April 25, 2016, Intel changed its warranty policy in India. Under the new “India Specific Warranty Policy”, Intel provided warranty support for its Boxed Micro Processors (BMPs) in India only if they were bought from an authorised Indian distributor. If customers had purchased the products from authorised distributors outside India, Intel refused to provide warranty service in India and asked them to claim the warranty in the country where the product was purchased.
After examining the evidence, the CCI concluded that Intel holds a dominant position in the market for boxed microprocessors for desktops in India. The Commission found that Intel’s India-specific policy was discriminatory because Intel did not follow such restrictive warranty conditions in countries like China and Australia or in other parts of the world.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) held that Intel violated Section 4 of the Competition Act by misusing its dominant position in the market. Since this policy had been running for eight years, the Commission first calculated a fine equal to 8% of Intel’s average sales (relevant turnover) during that period.
The CCI noted that although Intel had violated the rules, it had already withdrawn the India-Specific Warranty Policy from April 1, 2024. Considering all the facts, the CCI reduced the penalty and imposed a final fine of Rs. 27.38 crore. Apart from the penalty, the Commission also directed Intel to publicly announce the withdrawal of the India Specific Warranty policy and submit a compliance report.
