ChatGPT is Generating Photorealistic Fake Aadhar and Pan Card, Is It Causing Cyber Crime Risk?
Last week, GPT-4o's native image-generation capabilities were unlocked in ChatGPT. Since then, people have generated more than 700 million fake Aadhar and Pan Cards. Numerous people have shared these fake Aadhaar cards and PAN cards generated from ChatGPT on social media platforms. Some are using this ChatGPT ability just for fun, which raises an important question about using AI tools responsibly, especially when it comes to creating realistic-looking images. After seeing many such images on social media, ET Wealth Online tested ChatGPT to create something that looks like an Aadhaar card. The image looked very similar to a real one, but the text and numbers were mixed up and not accurate.
Possible Misuse of ChatGPT Fake Aadhaar Card
If you open ChatGPT and give it a prompt as, create an aadhar card prototype a man ( Example: Donald Trump) with the address (Such as: Defence Colony, Delhi, India) with any random no. and picture. Then, the fake photorealistic image will be displayed on the screen that looks almost similar to the real one. It is very difficult to differentiate between a fake and real Aadhar card. People of social media are confused from ChatGPT get training for the data to use for generating these types of accurate picture of an Aadhaar card. One of the users of social media made a fake Aadhar card of Aryabhatta using the new unlocked ability of ChatGPT. He stated, “ChatGPT is generating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards instantly, which is a serious security risk. This is why AI should be regulated to a certain extent.”ChatGPT is generating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards instantly, which is a serious security risk.

How to verify a real Aadhaar card using a QR code?
Right now, there’s no need to worry because the Aadhaar and PAN numbers generated by ChatGPT are completely random and don’t match any real ones. Also, the fake cards don’t have a QR code like the real ones do. So, with a basic security check, it’s easy to tell the difference between a real and fake Aadhaar or PAN card. Every Aadhaar card has a special Secure QR code printed on it. When you scan this QR code, you can check if the person showing the Aadhaar is really who they say they are. The UIDAI stated on its official website earlier that the QR Code present on the Aadhaar print letter and e-Aadhaar consisted of only the demographic information of the Aadhaar number holder. UIDAI has now launched a new Secure QR Code, which consists of demographics as well as a photograph of the Aadhaar number holder. The information in the QR code is safe and can't be changed because it’s digitally signed by UIDAI. This special QR code can be scanned using UIDAI’s app to check if it’s real. So, if someone tries to fake an Aadhaar card, it can be quickly detected by scanning the QR code. The Secure QR code is a type of visual code that has the person's photo and basic details from their Aadhaar. It is digitally signed by UIDAI to make sure it's real and safe. Every PAN card issued since 2018 has a QR code. That year, the Income Tax Department updated the design to include a better QR code with the cardholder’s photo, signature, and other details to make it more secure. You can also check if a PAN number is real on the Income Tax Department’s website. Data stored in the QR Code is as follows:- Ref ID
- Name
- Gender
- DOB
- Mobile
- Address
- Photograph
- 2048-bit digital signature
