GOI extends tenure of Shri Nitin Gupta as a Chairman of CBDT by 9 Months

The Department of Personnel and Training under the Government of India has extended the tenure of Shri Nitin Gupta as a Chairman of CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) by 9 Months till 30.06.2024 via issuing Notification.

Gupta’s nine-month extension came on the day he was supposed to retire and leave office. His service period has been extended “on a contract basis,” according to the Centre’s notification.

Nitin Gupta, 60, is an Income Tax department officer from the 1986 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). He was named CEO of the CBDT in June 2022.

Tax collection has reached new heights under Gupta’s leadership. The CBDT collected net direct taxes of Rs. 16.61 lakh crore in FY23, representing a 17.63 percent increase over the previous financial year’s collection of Rs. 14.12 lakh crore.

The Notification stated, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the re­appointment of Shri Nitin Gupta as Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), on contract basis, with effect from 01.10.2023 till 30.06.2024, or until further orders whichever earlier, in relaxation of the Recruitment Rules, on usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed Central Government officers.”
