Govt Bans Low Quality Phone Screen Protectors, Issues New Guidelines to Ensure Quality and Improve Consumer Safety:

The government has come up with new quality regulations for screen protectors of smartphones sold in India. All manufacturers and importers will have to ensure their screen protectors are in conformity with the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 before selling them in the country from April 1, 2027.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on September 21, smartphone screen protectors have been included in the compulsory registration regime of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This will mean that companies will have to meet the prescribed quality standards and complete the registration process.

IS 19348:2025 Quality and Test Requirements for Glass Screen Protectors. These include rules for strength, size, surface quality, light transmission and visible defects of glass. The standard also covers features such as adhesive quality, anti-shatter film, oleophobic coating, anti-glare protection, blue-light filtering and privacy films.

The rules also require important product details to be mentioned on the packaging. This includes information such as the manufacturer's name, batch number and thickness of the screen protector.

The new rules are expected to bring more consistency from the quality of the screen protectors that consumers can find in the market. Buyers now have a choice of products, from branded protectors to cheap, no-name brands with various levels of quality.
