The Indian government has decided to impose anti-dumping duties on Potassium Tertiary Butoxide (KTB) and Sodium Tertiary Butoxide (STB) that are being imported from China PR and the United States, after it was found that these chemicals were being sold in India at lower prices than the local industry.

The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) investigates dumping cases and is responsible for suggesting duties when it is necessary. DGTR in its final findings vide notification No. 6/11/2024-DGTR, dated the 25th March, 2025, concluded the following things:

  • KTB and STB are being exported from China PR and the United States to India at prices lower than their normal value. This is called dumping.
  • This dumping is causing serious harm to Indian manufacturers, who cannot compete with these low prices.
  • The imported goods are cheaper than what Indian companies can sell the same products for, making it hard for local producers to survive or grow.

The dumping often leads to harm in the local industry in India, and therefore, to protect the domestic industry from these unfair pricing practices, the central government has imposed an anti-dumping duty on the import of the mentioned goods for 5 years, unless the government changes or cancels this duty.

These duties have an impact on both the domestic industry and the foreign exporters. The local market in India would benefit from an anti-dumping duty. On the other hand, it might be difficult for the foreign exporters to enter industries where they have an anti-dumping duty.

Anti-dumping duties are crucial as they promote fair competition in international trade. The domestic industries get a chance to compete fairly and are protected from unfairly priced imports. The duty restores market stability and protects the local industries from job losses.
