GST Council Meeting Recommendations: Constitution of GST Appellate Tribunal approves by Council; Rules to be out by August 1st

The 50th meeting of Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council was held under the chairpersonship of Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. She announced the various important major changes.

The Council has suggested Rules regulating the appointment and conditions of the President and Members of the proposed GST Appellate Tribunal in order to ensure the smooth establishment and operation of the GST Appellate Tribunal.

The GST Council also recommended that provisions of Finance Act, 2023 pertaining to GST Appellate Tribunal may be notified by the Centre with effect from 01.08.2023, so that the same can be brought into operation at the earliest.

Furthermore, the council has suggested that the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra be appointed as a member of the Search Committee Selection Committee in accordance with Section 110(4)(b)(iii) of the CGST Act 2017. In terms of the number of State Benches, it was agreed to introduce them in stages.
