GST department seized Cigarettes worth Rs.2.35 crore in Anantapur The Central GST Division in Anantapur seized 40.68 lakh cigarettes valued at Rs.2.35 crore at Tapovanam Circle in the city on Sunday. Acting on specific intelligence on the contraband, division sleuths captured a container lorry that came from Patna (Bihar) and headed towards Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu) with a cargo of 'maida'. The driver claimed the package was worth Rs.4.8 lakh, but police discovered the GST registration had been cancelled suo motu by the department in June of last year. During the search, the staff discovered 40.68 lakh cigarettes of a local brand in 139 boxes hidden under the maida bags. Because the nature and value of the items were erroneously claimed using an invalid GST registration number, inspectors led by Assistant Commissioner of Central Tax (Anantapur CGST Division) G. Anitha seized the commodities along with the lorry, which was worth roughly Rs.20 lakh.
