GST Department to Develop Registration System for Shared Warehouse for E-Commerce
The GST Department, which is part of the Finance Ministry, is working on developing a registration system for shared warehouses in e-commerce.
Suppliers to an e-commerce platform are permitted under Goods and Services Tax (GST) rules to store their items in a single warehouse. However, in their GST registration, suppliers must include the warehouse as an additional place of business.
"We are investigating whether a shared workplace' or 'coworking space' concept can be implemented in warehouses maintained by e-commerce companies to store goods from multiple suppliers. It is currently under consideration. Whether a shared workplace concept can be implemented for e-commerce warehouses will be discussed at the law committee and then presented to the GST Council," a GST Department official said.
The official emphasized that when numerous taxpayers register at the same warehouse, the geo-tag shows the same address for everyone. This signals to the tax officer that a large number of taxpayers are based in the same location, which could indicate a fraudulent registration.
The other issue is that the warehouse where numerous suppliers store their goods should not be held responsible for the failure of a single provider. Furthermore, there is a possibility that tax officers will impute such risks to e-commerce operators themselves, thereby harming their enterprises, the source warned.
