GST Evasion Detection doubles to Rs.1.01 Lakh Crore in FY 2022-23 An official stated that GST evasion detection by tax inspectors nearly increased year on year to more than 1.01 lakh crore in the financial year just ended 2022-23. The officers of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) recovered 21,000 crore during the last financial year. According to the official, the government is increasing compliance and detecting fraud through data analytics and human intelligence. "DGGI officers discovered evasion totaling 1,01,300 crore in 2022-23. A total of 21,000 crore has been recovered," the official said. In 2021-22, the DGGI, the investigative agency under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, found over 54,000 crore in evasion and recovered over 21,000 crore in tax. The overall number of Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion instances found during the current financial year has increased to around 14,000 cases, up from 12,574 cases in 2021-22 and 12,596 cases in 2020-21. Fraudsters' methods included short payment of tax by undervaluing taxable goods and services, incorrect use of exemption notifications, incorrect use of the input tax credit, non-payment of tax on supply of taxable goods and services (clandestine removal), and fraudulent use of the input tax credit based on invoices from fake firms.
