GSTN adds State-specific Information Tab to GST Registration Process of Rajasthan
In a significant change to the GST registration process, the GST Network (GSTN) has included a new "State-Specific Information" tab to the GST REG-01 application for new GST registrations in Rajasthan. This upgrade intends to streamline state-specific compliance requirements and is comparable to those implemented in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Maharashtra.
Applicants must now select an Electricity Board and enter their Electricity Consumer Number during the registration process. This rule raises concerns for businesses that operate in areas without an electricity connection, such as shared workspaces or rural settings.
Although, the Professional Tax Number (PTN) and State Excise Number fields appear in the application, they are optional. However, because Rajasthan does not charge Professional Tax, this inclusion appears redundant for the state's businesses.
The electricity connection mandate could lead to challenges for startups, small businesses, and workplaces operating without direct utility connections. Businesses should ensure that they have valid electricity details before signing up for GST registration in the state. The move is consistent with state-specific compliance trends observed in MP and Maharashtra, indicating a broader shift towards localized GST regulations.
Following these changes, businesses in Rajasthan must now consider the new electricity board requirement when applying for GST registration. The change reflects increased digitization and state-specific customizations inside the GST framework, indicating potential future enhancements in other states as well.
