In order to chart the course for the growth of technical education in the nation in 1946, a committee appointed by the Indian government recommended the creation of 04 higher colleges of technology.
The first group of 100 students joined the program in 1958 after preparations began in 1957. The institute has physically grown to encompass more than 584 significant buildings with a combined size of more than 2.2 square kilometres since it was founded in Powai. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive graduate program with doctorate degrees in mathematics, science, technology, and engineering.
