Importer in Kandla Heroin Case Arrested by DRI
Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) are currently analyzing a shipment imported by an Uttarakhand-based enterprise at Kandla Port, based on intelligence developed together with officers of the Gujarat ATS. The shipment arrived in Kandla Port from the Iranian port of Bander Abbas. The cargo was declared as “gypsum powder” and was imported in 17 containers (10,318 bags) with a gross weight of 394 MT.
So far, 205.6 kilograms of heroin has been recovered, worth Rs. 1439 crores on the black market. The package is still receiving a thorough investigation at the port.
The importer was not found at the registered address in Uttarakhand during the investigation. As a result, a nationwide manhunt was initiated to find the importer. The importer was tracked down by DRI at numerous sites across India. To avoid being identified, the importer moved around and hid. However, diligent and determined efforts paid off, and the importer was discovered in a small Punjab village. The importer attempted to flee but was apprehended by DRI officers.
DRI has apprehended the alleged importer under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, and he has been presented before the Hon’ble Court of Special Duty Magistrate, Amritsar on the 24th of April, 2012. The Court has granted a transit remand to the DRI officers so that they can present the importer in front of the jurisdictional court in Bhuj.
Further investigation in the case is under progress
