As per the sources, on April 20, 2026, on the social media platform "X", K Selvaperunthagai (Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president and candidate from the Sriperumbudur Assembly constituency) had alleged that Income Tax Department officials stopped him in his constituency in the name of a “search” and prevented him from participating in election activities. He repeated the same allegations while talking to the media on the same day. Apart from this, some media reports also said that his residence in Kilpauk, Chennai, was raided by the Income Tax Department. All these allegations and news were immediately investigated. The Income Tax Department clarified that on 20th April 2026 or at any recent time. No search, survey, or any kind of action was taken against Selvaperunthagai. The department also said that no restrictions were imposed on his movement, nor was any action taken against any of his premises, including his house in Kilpauk.

The department further stated that the limited level of investigation activities conducted in the Sriperumbudur area was based only on certain specific intelligence inputs relating to the alleged movement of illicit cash. These were part of the regular investigation process, and their K had no connection with Selvaperunthagai. Nothing came to light in these investigations on the basis of which any further action should be taken. The Income Tax Department has also brought this matter to the notice of the Election Commission of India. Also, a complaint has been lodged with the Chennai Police Commissioner, demanding legal action against the person concerned for spreading false information.
