The Income Tax Portal now auto-fills overseas asset and income details in your Annual Information Statement (AIS) under AIS >> Reports >> Foreign Assets Information. The calendar years 2022, 2023, and 2024 are included (data for 2025 is expected soon).

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, has integrated foreign financial data received through the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework directly into the Annual Information Statement (AIS) of the taxpayers.

Why Is This Change Important?

With this change, taxpayers can now check the overseas details such as foreign bank accounts, overseas ESOPs, foreign dividends, etc., auto-populated by the income tax department in their AIS before filing or revising an Income Tax Return (ITR). Information can be checked by directly logging in at the income tax e-filing portal.

Taxpayers are advised to ensure the information in their AIS perfectly matches that mentioned in their Schedule FA (Foreign Assets) and Schedule FSI (Foreign Source Income).

Sometimes taxpayers fail to explain the mismatches detected in their tax returns or fail to declare foreign assets; this can lead to litigation, notices, and severe penalties up to Rs 10 lakh under the Black Money Act.
