Income Tax Officer Arrested for taking Bribe for issuing lower TDS certificate
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Income Tax Officer (ITO) for accepting a bribe of Rs. 4 lakh, for issuing a Lower Tax Deduction (TDS) Certificate from the complainant.
The case was registered, against the accused ITO, Ward-(2) (1) (1), Air India Building, Nariman Point, Mumbai on allegations that the ITO asked a bribe of Rs. 5.04 Lakhs which is 1% of the deal value of the property, which is Rs. 5.04 crores. He later agreed by Rs. 4 Lakh for issuing the Lower TDS Certificate in respect of the sale of a property of complainant’s maternal uncle, who is an NRI.
The Accused was caught red-handed and arrested by CBI on 02.05.2024.
Searches were conducted at the office and residential premises of the accused in Mumbai, which led to the recovery of Rs. 15.00 lakh cash, gold ornaments, papers related to investments in immovable and movable properties and the same are under scrutiny.
The investigation is continuing.
