If you have not filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) yet, do not think that everyone has got more time. The deadline for filing ITR depends on your taxpayer category. Now, some taxpayers can file their returns until August 31, 2026. But this extension is not applicable to everyone. Missing your correct deadline could result in late fees, interest and other penalties.
Who needs to file by July 31?
The last date to file ITR for most salaried employees, pensioners, students and persons who do not have business income or professional income is July 31, 2026. This is also applicable to taxpayers filing ITR-1 or ITR-2. If you fall into this category, you must file your return by July 31.
Who needs to file by August 31?
The government has, however, given extra time to taxpayers who earn income from a business or profession but are not required to get their accounts audited. These taxpayers can now file their ITR till August 31, 2026. This includes many business owners, freelancers, self-employed professionals and partners of firms not subject to tax audit. They have been given additional time to enable them to complete their accounts and file accurate returns.
Who has to file by October 31?
The ITR filing deadline for companies and taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited is October 31, 2026. At the same time, taxpayers required to file a transfer pricing report under section 92E can file their returns until Nov. 30, 2026.
Why has the government changed the deadlines?
The revised deadlines come after changes announced in the 2026 Union Budget. Although tax calculations for the financial year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27) will continue under the existing Income Tax Act, the government has changed the return filing schedule. The biggest change is that the deadline for taxpayers with non-audit business income has been extended from July 31 to August 31.
What do tax experts say?
Tax experts advise taxpayers not to assume that the deadline has been extended for everyone. Before filing your return, check your income category and the ITR form that applies to you. Filing after the applicable due date can lead to late fees, interest and other consequences.
