Madhabi Puri Buch Appointed as SEBI's New Chairperson
Madhabi Puri Buch has been named chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), according to finance ministry sources. She is the first woman to lead the capital market regulator, as incumbent Ajay Tyagi's term ends on February 28.
Madhabi Puri Buch, a former SEBI Whole Time Member, was previously selected to oversee the market regulator's new technology committee.
Buch was the first woman to serve as SEBI's WTM, as well as the first person from the private sector. She began her career at ICICI Bank before moving on to ICICI Securities as MD and CEO from February 2009 to May 2011.
She moved to Singapore in 2011 to work at Greater Pacific Capital LLP.
The stock market was waiting to see if SEBI will appoint a new chairman or if Ajay Tyagi, the incumbent chairman, would be given another term extension.
To be sure, the finance ministry issued a call for applications for the position of chairman in October, with a deadline of December 6th.
