Students with any degree and an interest in maths will be able to study data science at Madras School of Economics (MSE), which plans to introduce two new MS degree courses in data science and computational finance beginning in the next academic year (2024-25).

Students will learn about financial theory and computer applications during the two-year postgraduate degree in computational finance.

To participate in these courses, candidates must pass an entrance exam.

“The data science course will include programming languages such as Python, as well as advanced topics in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Students will learn basic financial theories and financial applications, including as stock market data analysis and investments, in computational finance,” stated K R Shanmugam, MSE director.

MSE presently offers five MA degrees in economics: general economics, financial economics, actuarial economics, environmental economics, and applied quantitative finance. It also provides postgraduate diploma courses in management.

The school, which is ranked second only to the Delhi School of Economics, touts virtually 100% placement for its PG students, with an average income of 15 lakh per year. As part of the development strategy, the institution intends to convert its PGDM programme into an MBA programme. Following the success of the BA economics (honours) degree, the university intends to introduce a BBA programme.

“We have 118 students enrolled in the first two years of the BA programme. Approximately half of them are from Tamil Nadu,” Shanmugam stated.

MSE is required to reserve 35% of the seats in each course for TN students. As many as 118 MSE graduates will get their diplomas during MSE’s inaugural convocation on December 2.

MSE has been providing degrees in collaboration with the Central University of Tamil Nadu.
