The Ministry of Finance has recently issued a notification (No. 40/2025-Customs, dated September 25, 2025) notifying the amendments made in one of its earlier notifications (No. 50/2017-Customs, dated the 30th June, 2017). As per the notification, the central government, using the powers under section 25(1) of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962) and section 3(12) of the Customs Tariff Act, 1975 (51 of 1975), is making the following changes in the table of the notification dated 30th June, 2017:

For Serial No. 597, in column (3), the second proviso has been replaced and item (i) will take effect after 30th September 2025, while items (iii) and (v) will take effect after 30th September 2027.

Additionally, for Serial Numbers 598, 601, 602, and 603, the year “2025” mentioned earlier in the notification has been replaced with “2027”. The notification is applicable from September 30, 2025.

Section 25(1) of the Customs Act gives the authority to the central government to give an exemption from customs duty if it is necessary in the public interest.
